The Minuteman by Daniel Chester French stands at the site of the first day's fighting in the War for Independence. The statue depicts a farmer-soldier leaving his spring plowing to answer the call to arms. The minuteman statue, widely used as the emblem of the National Guard, was erected in 1875 as a part of the centennial celebration of the Revolution.
