| This 76-foot lighthouse was lit for the first time in 1823. In the early days the lighthouse keepers painted it with a whitewash made to a recipe supplied by the U.S. Lighthouse Board, which included unslaked lime, salt, ground rice, Spanish whiting, and clear glue. |
