Additional Details:
The Chalet atop Mount Royal was completed in 1932 at a cost of almost a quarter of a million dollars. It is situated on the Lookout atop Mount Royal giving a breath-taking panorama of downtown Montreal, the St. Lawrence River, and, on clear days even the Adirondacks of northern New York State. The Chalet is a stone structure of modern design, contains a large concert hall where banquets, receptions and dances are held; souvenir and gift shop and a restaurant. An unusual series of paintings on the walls inside the Chalet depict the history of Canada. It is a great rendezvous for winter sports and there are fine facilities for skiing, skating, tobogganing and snow-shoeing. Among Royal visitors to the Chalet have been King George VI and Queen Elizabeth; Prince George, Duke of Kent; King Peter of Yugoslavia; King George of Greece and Princess Juliana of the Netherlands. A visit to the chalet also invites a close-up view of the cross on the summit of Mount Royal—one of Montreal’s famous landmarks.
