Additional Details:

Found only in the evergreen woods at high altitudes in the mountains in California. The bright red blossoms often appear in early spring while the snow is still on the ground. It does not derive its food from the soil as normal plants do, but takes it from dead or decaying vegetable growth. It has no green matter as it cannot produce chlorophyll. It is so rare that a state law forbids picking it without a special permit.
