| The Corcoran Gallery of Art is on 17th St., southwest of both the White House and State, War and Navy Building. It was founded and endowed by the late W. W. Corcoran in 1869, as a gift to the public. The building is of white marble and contains a collection of sculpture, casts, bronzes, paintings and art objects important in extent and value. Notably among its possessions in marble are Powers' "Greek Slave" and Velas' "Last Days of Napoleon I." and among its Canvases Mueller's "Charlotte Corday," Brooke's "A Pastoral Visit," Renouf's "The Helping Hand," Von Thoren's "Lost Dogs," Corot's "Wood Gatherer" and Chierici's "Fun and Fright." |
