Additional Details:
The Huey P. Long Bridge is 4.4 miles long including approaches, the longest railroad bridge in the Mississippi. It cost $13,000,000 and has two 18-ft. auto roadways, toll free. It forms a juncture of two transcontinental highways, Old Spanish Trail from the Atlantic to Pacific and Jefferson Highway from the Gulf to Canada. Its central pier rests on sand 172 ft. below the water of the river and it extends a total of 409 ft. high, equal to a 36-story office building. The bridge provides a 135 ft. vertical clearance and a 790 ft. horizontal clearance.
