Completed in 1901, it is the third highest shaft in America. It memorializes four epochs in the history of Indiana — the period of the Revolution, the War With Mexico, the War of 1812, and the War For The Union. Many huge statues surround its base and overlook its fountain pools. A museum occupies its basement. An observation platform, reached by an elevator, is near its 284½ foot peak. Located in Monument Circle, in the heart of the down-town area, it was built and is maintained by the State of Indiana.
