Additional Details:
Comprises 1500 acres of scenery unsurpassed in beauty and Indian legendry. The rocky eminence, rising about 130 feet from the water, was the site of Fort St. Louis, built by La Salle in 1682. Starved Rock received its name from an incident which occurred in 1769 when a band of Illinois Indians pursued by Pottawatomies took refuge on the summit. Surrounded and unable to obtain food and water, they slowly starved to death. Starved Rock State Park is near Utica, between Ottawa and La Salle on State Highway 71.
