One of the largest shipping ports in China. Hong Kong is situated on a small island off the south-east coast of China, 10 miles in length and 7½ miles in breadth. The general appearance of the island is somewhat picturesque but on the whole rugged and bare, being composed mostly of granite rocks that rise from the sea to the heights of 1,000 to 2,000 feet. It is a free port, and is controlled by the British.
