A glimpse of the yearly Carnival. It is wildest & gayest along the Rhine from Cöln to Mainz. It lasts for three days, & every kind of exaggeration is seen. Always just before Lent. We were taken to Köln to see the Carnival. Tremendous the pretty fancy caps & neck ruffles and sort of wands worn. One lady wore a dress of red velvet trimmed with gold. Fanny's was blue. We sat in some large windows where we could lean out into the street. Thousands of rolls of paper ribbon were thrown across from windows to window all along the street making a network and festoons of gay colors. I recall seeing distinctly a mammoth champagne bottle walking along. The man inside was entirely invisible except for his feet.
