The Battle Monument is a magnificent shaft of gray-blue dolomite, 306 feet 4½ inches high, with an entrance hall and a grand lookout floor accessible by 412 steps. It was designed by architect I. Philipp Rinn of Boston. The cornerstone was laid on August 16, 1887, and the monument was dedicated on August 19, 1891. It commemorates the Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777, and cost $112,000.00.
