The Battle Monument at Bennington Center, Vermont, is a magnificent shaft of gray-blue dolomite, thirty-seven feet square at the base and, including the metal star at the top, 306 feet 4½ inches high. The entrance hall, twenty feet square and thirty-nine feet high, is a landing for the stairs. Between the entrance hall and grand Lookout floor there are thirty-four flights with 412 steps. The architect was I. Philipp Rinn of Boston. The corner stone was laid on August 16, 1887. The monument was dedicated on August 19, 1891. It commemorates the Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777. The cost of the monument was $112,000.00.
