Paris La Bourse (Stock Exchange) with Grand Staircase

| The Bourse, or Exchange, is a handsome building in the Græco-Roman style, located in the small Place de la Bourse. It is surrounded by 66 Corinthian columns, an imitation of the Temple of Vespasian in Rome. Construction began in 1808 by Brongniart and was completed in 1826 by Labarre. It measures 75 yds. long, 45 yds. wide, and 100 ft. high, with columns 33 ft. high and 3 1/3 ft. thick. The edifice is enclosed by a railing and approached by a flight of sixteen steps at each end. Allegorical statues of Commerce by J. Dumont and Consular Justice by Duret are at the front, with Industry by Pradier and Agriculture by Seurre at the back. The hall of the Bourse, 35 yds. in length and 19 yds. in width, is open for business daily, except on Sundays and holidays. |
