Additional Details:
In 1840 through the carelessness of a workman in repairing the bell frame in the South West Tower, the Nave of York Minster was completely gutted by fire. Many thrilling incidents are related of that awful night. When the huge roof fell and a sudden glare of fire lit up the darkness within the great crucifix in the West Window of the South Aisle shone out distinctly and beautifully and the cordon of soldiers who surrounded the building to keep back the crowds involuntarily raised their hands to the salute. The cost of restoration was £24,560.
