Here is an excellent view of the great dome (102 feet in diameter, and only 37 feet less than that of St. Peter's). The dome is double, and the lantern above it is supported on a hollow cone of brickwork resting on the inner dome. On the lantern is a ball 6 feet in diameter, which can hold a dozen people, and above the ball stands a cross. The ball and cross weigh 8960 lbs.
