| General Meade with his staff arrived upon the field of Gettysburg from Taneytown at midnight on the first day of battle, and established his headquarters on the west side of the Taneytown Road, in the rear of Cemetery Hill. From this point he directed the battle of the second and third days. The homely little cottage, still preserved, shows still the marks of rifle-balls and solid shot. |
