Flagstaff is located on the high Coconino Plateau and at the foot of the San Francisco Peaks. In a celebration of the Fourth of July 1876, scouts stripped a tall pine and bound an American flag to the tree. The flagpole became known from Sante Fe to San Francisco. When people traveling west asked the way, they were told, 'travel straight west, stranger, until you see that Flagstaff.' In 1891 the camp became the county seat of Coconino County, the second largest county in the United States. The town was incorporated as a city in 1920. |
