| Historic Fort Sumter, located in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor, is where the Confederate War (the War between the States or Civil War) began on April 12, 1861. A mortar shell fired from nearby Fort Johnson burst directly over Fort Sumter to start the conflict. Two years later the Confederates withstood a 22 month Federal siege and bombardment and at the end Ft. Sumter was stronger defensively than ever. |
