A Short Guide to the Yu Garden Built from 1559 to 1577, the Yu Garden was a private garden during the Ming Dynasty. Covering an area of about two hectares, the garden is included of no less than thirty picturesque and fascinating scenes of antique style. Reflecting the mode of typical architecture of the southern China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, these antique constructions of pavilions, grottoes, rocks and ponds crystallize the collective wisdom of the working people of our country. The Spring Hall in the garden was once made the northern city headquarters of the Dagger Society during its armed uprising in 1853. The Dagger Society was a revolutionary organization of the people who responded to the revolution of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Having been seriously destroyed in old days, the garden was restored and repaired after the liberation and is now a place well-liked by Chinese and foreign tourists.
