Oil on canvas, 47 x 39 in. Briton Riviere, R.A. (1840-1920) was born in London and came from a family of painters. He studied at Cheltenham College where his father was Drawing Master and went on to take a degree at Oxford in 1866. Riviere was best known for his paintings of animals, often humorous but mostly sentimental in treatment. Sympathy, a painting of his daughter, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878 and became widely known through engravings. There is an oil study for the painting in the Tate Gallery.
