Southeast of Tucson 94 miles, 216 miles southeast of Phoenix. Approached from Tucson via U.S. Highway 80, State 83, 82 and 92. Rich in the history of the Old West, the fort was established in 1877 to give protection to settlers in southeastern Arizona from the Apache Indians. Soldiers garrisoned here fought such notables as Geronimo and Pancho Villa. Special arrangements for visitors' passes can be made to see the military reservation which is now electronic testing center for the U.S. Army. (Elev. 4,600 ft. at Sierra Vista.)
