George Washington, first President of the United States, was born Feb. 22d, 1732, on the banks of the Potomac, Virginia. Mount Vernon was built by his half-brother Lawrence, who died in 1752, when George went to Mount Vernon to live. The house contains about twenty rooms; in the dining-room (on the right) is the Carrara marble mantel sent to George Washington from Italy. On Jan. 6th 1759, Washington married Mrs. Martha Custis, a young widow. He died of pneumonia on Dec. 14th, 1799, his wife surviving him three years. |
