| "Sherwood Forest"—Home of John Tyler. John Tyler became the tenth President of the United States on April 6th, 1841, two days after the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison. He was born in Greenway, Charles City Co., Va., March 29th, 1790, and was graduated from William and Mary College in 1807. In 1813 he was married to Letitia Christian. Mrs. Tyler died at the White House in September, 1842. In June, 1844, Tyler married Julia Gardner. At the expiration of his term of office, he retired to "Sherwood Forest," where he indulged in his scholarly tastes and dispensed agreeable hospitality. He died at his home on Jan, 17th, 1862, his wife surviving him 37 years. |
