| Canton – Home of William McKinley. William McKinley, twenty-fourth President of the United States, was born on Jan. 29th, 1843, in Niles, Ohio. He never attended college. He married Ida Saxton in 1871. Mrs. McKinley was an invalid for many years. While McKinley was holding a reception at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, Sept. 14th, 1901, he was shot by Leon Czolgosz, and died five days later. His widow died at their Canton home in 1907. Both rest in an imposing tomb in Westlawn Cemetery, Canton, which was erected by popular subscription, at a cost of $500,000. |
