Additional Details:
Mentor – Home of James A. Garfield. James A. Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Orange Township, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Nov. 19th, 1831. He was graduated from Williams College in 1856. In 1858, he married Lucretia Randolph. Mentor was their home except when his official duties called him elsewhere. On July 2d, 1881, he was shot in the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Depot at Washington, by Charles Guiteau. He lingered until Sept. 19th, when he died at Elberon, N.J., where he had been removed on Sept. 6th. Garfield’s remains rest in a beautiful monument in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland.
