| From Blowing Rock can be seen a far-flung panorama of magnificent mountain scenery that is unsurpassed. This colossal rock, leaning over the deep dimensions of John's River Gorge, derives its name from the fact that at nearly all times a strong wind is blowing at this point. Here wind currents defy the laws of nature, and it is said that if a light object, such as a handkerchief, or a straw hat, is thrown from the rock, it will be blown back by the force of the wind sweeping up from the gorge below—"Believe it or not!" |
