Peter Cooper's Tom Thumb Replica 1829-30 B&O R.R.
Additional Details:
| First steam locomotive constructed and operated on a commercial railroad in America. Built by Peter Cooper, New York inventor and philanthropist, in 1829, its first successful trip was on August 25, 1830, when it pushed a small open car, with 18 passengers, from Baltimore to Ellicott's Mills, a distance of 13 miles, and return, in about two hours. On the return trip, a driver of one of the B&O's horse cars challenged Cooper to a race. The horse won when the blower belt on the engine broke. |
