Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of George Washington, painted at Philadelphia in 1780, hangs in the Clerk's office of the reconstructed Capitol building. Washington served many years as a member of the House of Burgesses and received the thanks of the House on three occasions for his valiant military service in the French and Indian wars.
