Overlooking Jackson Square in the heart of the Vieux Carre, or Old Quarter of New Orleans, is the Cabildo, erected in 1795. The transfer of Louisiana from Spain to France and from France to the United States took place here in 1803. Lafayette resided here in 1825 as a guest of the city. It now houses the Louisiana Historical Museum with its interesting and valuable exhibits and library.
