Totem Bight Tribal House Tlingit Homes Alaska
Additional Details:
| This long house represents the Tlingit homes built in the early nineteenth century. The inside is one large room. A square fireplace in the center is surrounded by a planked platform. This room would supply living quarters for several families, with common use of the fireplace. An adjustable frame and cover protects a smoke hole from rain and wind. The low oval entrance is common for the ancient homes. A stylized painting of the raven decorates the front of this house, the painting common to only a few homes. On the corner front poles men are seated, equipped with pole and hat for use in a dance or a potlatch. |
