| Bears the name of the Alaskan Sound. First commissioned on January 8, 1945 in time to operate with the Pacific Fleet as a seaplane tender during the closing campaigns of World War II. In 1948, to fulfill the Navy's need for a floating proving ground for the development and testing of guided missiles, the USS NORTON SOUND underwent an extensive conversion to become the first Guided Missile Ship. In her new capacity, she has served as a floating laboratory and launching platform for several high priority missile projects. |
