| Moscow is the second capital (formerly the only capital) of the Russian empire and is situated 400 miles southeast of St. Petersburg. It is surrounded by a wall of earthen ramparts, 26 miles in circumference, and of no defensive value. The foundation of the city dates from 1147. The principal event in the history of Moscow is the burning of it in 1812, for the purpose of dislodging Napoleon from his winter quarters. The population is 1,150,000. |
