| The U. S. Protected Cruiser Milwaukee, an unarmored steel vessel, was built at San Francisco by Union Iron Works. It is 424 feet long by 66 feet wide with a mean draft of 22½ feet and a displacement of 9700 tons. On trial, it achieved a speed of 22.22 knots with 24,166 horsepower. The vessel cost $2,325,000 and was launched on September 10, 1904. It features two military masts and four funnels, with a complement of 36 officers and 627 men. Its main battery consists of fourteen 6-inch R. F. guns, and its secondary battery includes eighteen 3-inch R. F., twelve 3-lb. S. A., eight 1-lb. R. F., two 3-inch F., four 30 caliber A, and two 30 caliber M guns. |
