Old Stone Jail, Hornitos, California
Additional Details:
| This is one of the most picturesque towns in the southern mines area of the Mother Lode and is especially distinguished in having been the first incorporated town in Mariposa County. It derived its name from its Mexican graves, built of stone and shaped like square bake ovens, which were placed on top of the ground. This old jail housed many a hard character, for Hornitos was a rugged community. It once boasted a population of 15,000. Today it has less than 200. |
