John Ascuaga's Nugget features Bertha and Tina, the performing elephants. Bertha was born in India in 1945, and Tina in Thailand in 1965. They weigh approximately 10,000 pounds when mature. They have an expected growth rate of about 400 pounds a year and are fed a balanced diet of oat hay, vegetables, fruit, and bread. They receive extensive pedicures every six weeks and are groomed daily. Their custom-built 'Elephant Palace' is located just west of the Nugget at 14th Street and Nugget Avenue, with a swimming pool and fenced exercise yard. The public is invited to visit Bertha and Tina at their home any day of the week between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. |
