| This low spreading cactus of flat joints, bears no spines but tiny cushions of brownish hair-like spicules or 'stickers'. The brilliant magenta blossoms develop into reddish purple fruit, commonly called 'cactus apples'. This fruit, when the stickers are removed, is cooked with meat by the Indians, and made into 'cactus candy' by the Mexicans. |
