| This imposing monument, the work of Valentine, is remarkable for its symbolical character as well as its artistic beauty. Standing upon a base of native granite is the portrait figure of the first and only President of the C.S.A. His right hand is outstretched in eloquent appeal to the Future while his left hand rests upon the open book of History. In the rear is a graceful peristyle, with appropriate inscriptions upon its architrave. In the center rises a lofty column, surmounted by an allegorical figure, representing the "Spirit of the South" at the feet of which is the inscription "Deo Vindice" (God will Vindicate). |
