Completed in 1894 at a cost of over £1,000,000. Tower Bridge is one of the best known features of the London scene. The lifting and lowering of the bascules, each weighing over a thousand tons, to allow the passage of ships, takes about five minutes, and is performed by hydraulic machinery. By an act of Parliament a tug has always to be in readiness nearby for possible emergencies.
