The Early English north transept, where the Five Sisters Window is to be found, was built between 1241 and 1260 by John le Romayn (d. 1260) Treasurer of the Minster. No other English cathedral has so much of its original glass or glass of such quality representing the finest work of the whole Sisters of the Middle Ages. The slender lights of the Five Sisters are filled with 13thc grisaille glass in a pattern of entwined foliage. The predominant colour is grayish green. The window is the subject of the story The Five Sisters of York in the novel Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens.
