Additional Details:
Originally it was to be called William IV Square, but was then renamed after the sea battle in 1805 when Nelson defeated the French. In tribute to Nelson, the 154 ft. column was erected and on completion the twelve builders were reputed to have celebrated this with a 5 course luncheon on the empty platform. Features of the Square are the fountains, the famous pigeons and it is often the centre for mass rallies. In close proximity are the National Gallery and the Admiralty Buildings.
