The Surveyor was the first American spacecraft to make soft-landings on the Moon, returning television pictures of the lunar terrain, collecting and analyzing soil samples, and transmitting data of value to scientists and engineers planning the Apollo manned lunar missions. Five Surveyors were successfully landed on the Moon between May 1966 and January 1968.
