| In the original plans, Trafalgar Square was to be called William IV Square, but by the time it was completed, it was generally agreed that William had not been much of a king, whereas Trafalgar had been a great and historical battle. Instead, a tribute was paid to Nelson and his statue placed on the top of a 154 ft. column. On the day the column was completed, the twelve men who built it celebrated with a five course luncheon (with wine). Now the famous pigeons adorn the column. |
