Henry III commissioned the shrine of St Edward the Confessor (d. 1066) "of purest gold, silver and precious stones" all of which was stolen at the Dissolution. The base of the shrine is by Peter of Rome in 1269. Like the tomb, it is decorated with mosaic work by the Cosmati family from Italy. The recesses were intended for the use of kneeling pilgrims. The wooden Renaissance canopy over the shrine was last added by John Feckenham, last abbot of Westminster, and is dated 1557.
