Mono Lake, California - Salty Water Body with Islands
Additional Details:
| Mono (short for "Monache") is an Indian word used by the Yokuts for all Indians that lived on the eastern side of the Sierras. This salty and bitter body of water is twenty by fifteen miles in size and has two islands, Negit and Paoha. There are several kinds of water birds that use the lake as a haven. A great number of sea gulls nest here in the spring then migrate to the coast in October. There is evidence that at one time the lake was four times larger and that the water level was 600 feet higher. |
