Ridge Route, Winding Mountain Highway
Additional Details:
| The first corkscrew road was completed in 1919 and followed the early stage route from Los Angeles to Bakersfield. The first explorers were troops with Don Pedro Fages who in 1772 were looking for two deserters from the Alto California army. On Aug. 10, 1854 Lt. Col. Beale established Fort Tejon that lasted ten years. In 1858 the army camel train made a stop here. This was the home of the Yokut and Shoshone tribes. Gorman was named for Private Gorman of Fort Tejon who, when discharged from the army in 1864, took up a homestead here along with two other soldiers. |
