| The railroad, built in 1876, features a track that makes a complete circle with a circumference of 3,795 ft., crossing over itself 78 ft. from the top. The mountains form the south end of the San Joaquin Valley. Early explorers of the region included Father Garces (1776), Jedediah S. Smith (1827), and John C. Fremont (1884). Lt. Williamson surveyed for a practical railroad pass in 1853. |
