Designated Pony Express Plaza, Marking the Western Terminus Site of this romantic historically significant service. Sam Hamilton, the first rider, left the Hastings Building at 2:45 A.M. on April 4, 1860 to start the mail on a 1,966 mile run to St. Joseph, Missouri, the Eastern Terminus. There were 121 known riders and 119 relay stations along the trail, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. 308 round trips were made. They carried 34,753 pieces of mail, losing one pouch to hostile Indians.
