| PONY EXPRESS STATUE. Old Sacramento State Historical Park, designated Pony Express Plaza, marking the Western Terminus site of the historic service. Sam Hamilton, the first rider, left the Hastings Building at 2:45 AM April 4, 1860 to start the mail on a 1,966 mile run to the St. Joseph, Missouri, Eastern Terminus. There were 121 known riders and 119 Relay Stations along the trail in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. 308 round trips were made, carrying 34,753 pieces of mail and losing only one pouch to hostile Indians. |
