Annual Decorating Mitchell Corn Palace, World's Only
Additional Details:
| Each summer the Corn Palace is redecorated for the BIG fall festival the first week of September. The old grasses and corn are replaced with new materials plus a new theme. The rodeo is this year's theme (1995). Visitors ask how this craft is done. The corn is cut in half lengthwise, and then nailed on the panels. A local artist, Cal Schultz draws the designs on black tar paper and specifies the color he wishes to use (all the corn is natural color). It is then nailed to the prescribed spot. It takes about 2 months each year to complete this task. |
