RED CLOUD Mahpialuta The most famous chief of the Oglala Sioux. Not a chief by birth, he rose to leadership by his bravery and wisdom in council. He was never defeated by the whites and made them back down at every diplomatic turn. Red Cloud was 87 when he died on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
